Having a shorter workweek is one of the benefits of owning your own home. It gives you more free time to enjoy your weekends. It also allows you to spend more time with your family and friends.
Working hours
Earlier this year, ByteDance’s Tiktok scrapped its two-weekly leave policy, a policy which alternating employees would take off two weeks at a time. However, according to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, Tiktok staff are working beyond the company’s stated hours.
Tiktok staff are required to work from 10 AM to 7 PM on weekdays, and must request permission to work past the stipulated time. Tiktok is a social networking site owned by ByteDance. The company owns other online services such as Meituan and Bilibili. It is the first Chinese tech company to institute a policy that discourages overtime.
However, many employees are complaining about working long hours. In fact, some former employees said they worked up to 12 hours a day. They also say they felt pressured to work late into the night.
In a recent campaign to share their working hours, ByteDance’s workers posted a collaborative spreadsheet on the internet. The document drew input from employees of other Chinese internet giants. They were encouraged to share their working hours. However, the campaign did not last long. A TikTok representative declined to comment on the issue. In an effort to improve the company’s work environment, ByteDance is also planning to cut back its working hours, and to offer employees 30 weeks of paid leave. This is a step in the right direction, but it is still a long way from being a workplace that promotes worker welfare.
